The Journal and Resource Center Of Indonesia Today

Going online has become a necessity for businesses, the media in particular, expecting to progress to the next millennium. Recent development in Indonesia shows that the Web is the future of news and information as evidenced by the increasing number of media publications available over the Internet.

As the largest English newspaper in Indonesia, The Jakarta Post has anticipated this trend and has dedicated a considerable amount of time and resources to preparing its website. We are proud to announce that the online version of our newspaper is now vailable on the Web. The Jakarta Post.com is more than just an extension of The Jakarta Post daily newspaper. As the name suggests, it also offers breaking news and a wealth of information on Indonesia. By providing up-to-date, in-depth accurate information and analyses, The Jakarta Post.com aspires to be a one-stop reference point on Indonesia that will serve both local and international audiences.

1. The Journal

The Journal is a special, free-of-charge version of The Jakarta Post. Having in mind an international audience interested in events taking place in Indonesia, this online version of the newspaper – The Jakarta Post.com – carries local stories that appear in the printed edition, and more. To meet public demand for real-time news, The Jakarta Post.com has news flashes which are updated as each story develops, as well as stock updates and the daily rupiah market rate.

Taking full advantage of the unlimited space available on the Web, The Jakarta Post.com also provides featured articles and special coverage that may not otherwise appear in the printed edition. Should readers miss something, our Weekly Roundup will keep them informed of recent past news that may have been important or of great interest to them. This feature is especially helpful to irregular visitors or newcomers to our website. A picture often says more than words can ever tell. Our Gallery unveils telling sights of great human interest as well as journalistic and artistic shots that have not made it into our printed edition due to space restraints. Here, visitors can browse for carefully selected photos for viewing or purchase. Another highlight is Today in Indonesian History, a paragraph on the opening screen containing historical events of the corresponding date in the past. To serve is one of our mottoes in creating this website. It is therefore a great pleasure for us to assist visitors to our site in dealing with Indonesian acronyms, one of the daily linguistic problems that confront both Indonesians and foreigners. This section provides users with English translations of common acronyms. As a one-stop reference point, The Jakarta Post.com offers linkages to selected government as well as non-governmental institutions and organizations, research centers, and the country's best universities.

2. Resource Center

Our Resource Center will become an important reference for anyone looking for complete and accurate information on Indonesia. Researchers and Indonesianists will benefit greatly from this facility, which no other online media in Indonesia offers.

The Jakarta Post Archives. One of the Resource Center's most interesting features is its database-formatted archives, making The Jakarta Post.com the first and only online media in Indonesia to date with this facility. So far over 40,000 news articles from our printed edition are stored in our database, dating back to June 1994. The Post is presently undertaking an ambitious endeavor to digitalize and make available its stories right through to its first edition on April 25, 1983.

Who's Who in Indonesia. Editorialized biographical sketches of Indonesia's people of importance, plus head shots. People from all walks of life are represented here such as, among others, politicians, businesspeople, intellectuals, religious and public figures, lawyers, artists, actors and musicians.

Provincial Snapshots. As a window to Indonesia, The Jakarta Post.com provides basic information on Indonesia's 27 provinces, each accompanied with a map. We hope to further develop this section to provide users with information on business and investment opportunities in each province.

Company Profiles. This section is dedicated to Indonesian companies with both domestic and international reputations, in the hope that their exposure on our website will help them develop and expand their businesses. Our Company Profiles gives emphasis to credible Indonesian businesses of great potential but which, due to a lack of media exposure, remain relatively unknown compared to the country's conglomerates.

Laws and Regulations. A vast collection of laws and regulations issued since the founding of the Republic of Indonesia, this section is a must for businesspeople, foreign policy experts, researchers, writers and journalists whose work demands that they fully understand Indonesia's laws and regulations that affect their areas of interest and operation.

Outlook. Taylor-made for The Jakarta Post.com, Outlook provides in-depth reporting and analyses on hot issues by our editorial staff as well as by carefully selected and credible writers to enable visitors to completely grasp an issue.

Merpati plane forced back to airport

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: A Merpati plane carrying 96 passengers from Maumere, on Flores island, to Kupang, on Timor island, was forced to return to Waioti airport just 10 minutes after takeoff on Saturday.

A mechanical problem caused the plane to return to the airport. According to reports the problem had to do with the plane's air-conditioning system.

The plane was on the ground for about 45 minutes for repairs, before taking off again at 5:45 p.m. local time.

Passengers say air conditioners in the cabin started blowing out hot air.

Shortly afterward, it was announced the plane was returning to Maumere due to a mechanical problem.

"We don't know why the temperature suddenly changed. We only heard the announcement that the plane had to return to Maumere," a passenger, Wilibrodus, said.

President to stay in mudflow area of Porong

source www.thejakartapost.com

JAKARTA (JP): President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to stay in mudflow area of Porong, East Java for several days to get a comprehensive report on the mudflow from various institutions.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said before a cabinet meeting on Monday that the President would stay there for probably three days.

Susilo Bambang faces mounting political pressure from the House of Representatives recently. After avoiding the House's interpellation session on Iran issue, Susilo Bambang has to deal with a planned interpellation on Porong mudflow.

Susilo Bambang just met Porong mudflow victims at his house on Sunday. Those victims asked him a favor to speed up the compensation disbursement promised by energy firm Lapindo.

What is salary do you expect

"What is salary do you expect" is a question that you want to hear but never want to answer. Most of the times because you will be scared you may undersell yourself; and your fears are well founded. Many employers who ask about the last salary taken, offer about 10-30% above your last salary even if their company generally pays more for the job. There are many ways to beat this problem:

- Be prepared for the question: Best way to handle any problem in life is to be prepared. Interviews too are difficulties that one has to prepare for. In order to be prepared with a good answer you need to know what type of salary the position you are applying for entails. First find out about the salary in the market. You can also find out about the salary offered in the same company either thought the net, or by asking some of the employees - directly or indirectly. Whatever may be your sources, be sure you have a good idea of what the job pays before you face the interview.
- Be prepared to negotiate: The interviewer more often than not will follow the 'what salary do you expect' question with 'what was your last salary'. When asked this be truthful as much as possible. In case you feel the salary you were earning was too low and might make a wrong impression or fix the negotiating platform too low, emphasize why the past salary was not the right remuneration for the job you were doing while at the same time comparing positively to the added value you would give the present job. You should come across as deserving the higher bracket, and not only hankering for a higher pay.
- Be prepared to redirect: The question can very diplomatically passed back with, 'that depends on what is the going remuneration for the job here' or 'what have you earmarked for the job' or 'what is the salary you offer for the job'. Then wait for the answer - if you find it adequate accept it saying it is the same thing you had in mind. If not negotiate for a higher salary based upon your experience, qualifications and extra capabilities.
- Be open: You may say that you were expecting x amount. Be careful though, the interviewer will definitely want to find out why you named that amount - and you should be ready to say why - such as, it is the market rate for the job; it is a reasonable increase on the past job remuneration; the job responsibilities and time would entail it, etc. You need to back up your answer not only with apt reasoning, but also with confidence.
- Be prepared for a lower offer: Whatever you say, unless you are dealing with a highly established company/organization where positions and pays are fixed, you will be offered a slightly lower offer that you name. At that time, if you think it is worthy to jump on the wagon even if it is at a lightly lower salary than expected, then say so. If not, state clearly the minimum salary you would require and why. However, sometimes it is worthy to gain entry into a good company even if the beginning pay is lower than expected, provided the growth prospects are good and the brand of the company looks good on your resume.

Sifat Dengki

Dengki Penghambat Sukses
Hilangnya kesempatan kerja sama
Hilangnya kesempatan belajar
Randy Gage seorang pembicara motivasi mengatakan "studying people who aresuccessful in your area gives you the opportunity to model what they havedone. You learn from their experience and can achieve your own sooner."(mempelajari orang yang sukses pada bidang Anda akan memberikan kesempatankita untuk mencontoh apa yang mereka telah lakukan.
